Deep Dive into the Wild

Twelve days and five ecosystems: Wilpattu’s sloth bears, the Minneriya gathering, Sinharaja’s endemics, three Yala safaris, Bundala’s flamingos and blue whales off Mirissa.

Overview

Twelve days, five ecosystems, one small island

For the passionate naturalist, Sri Lanka is a visual revelation—a compact island that contains a high concentration of large mammal species. The Deep Dive into the Wild itinerary is designed to maximize your time inside the island’s premier national parks and marine sanctuaries. The wildlife journey begins in the dry zone scrub forests of Wilpattu. Wilpattu is unique for its “Villus”—natural, rain-filled sand basins that form beautiful lakes throughout the forest. Cruising along the dirt tracks in the early morning, the forest air is cool and heavy with the scent of wild sage. The silence is broken by the deep, barking alarm call of a spotted deer. Your jeep stops, and out from the thick foliage steps a massive Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, its shaggy black coat catching the light as it uses its long claws to dig into a termite mound, completely unbothered by your presence.

The wildlife narrative transitions from the dry forests to the open wetlands of Minneriya. Here, you witness one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles: The Gathering. As the dry season progresses, hundreds of wild Asian elephants travel from surrounding forests to the banks of the ancient Minneriya reservoir. Standing in your open-top vehicle, looking out across the vast grasslands, you see elephants everywhere you look—entire family herds with tiny calves swimming in the shallows, young bulls sparring, and massive matriarchs guiding their families. The air is filled with their deep rumbles and high-pitched trumpets, an unforgettable encounter with wild giants.

The final chapters of this wildlife expedition are written in the deep blue waters off the southern coast. Boarding a custom vessel at dawn, you head into the open ocean where the continental shelf drops rapidly. The salt spray hits your face as you scan the horizon. Suddenly, a huge plume of water shoots into the air—the unmistakable blow of a Blue Whale. The scale of the creature is staggering as its long, bluish-grey back curves out of the water, culminating in a massive tail fluke that lifts smoothly into the air before sliding into the deep ocean. It is a humbling moment that perfectly rounds out a journey through the wild spaces of the land and sea.

Day by day

Itinerary

Met at the airport and driven to a lakeside eco-resort in the Cultural Triangle. A relaxed evening bird walk in the grounds.

Overnight — Habarana

A full day in Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park, tracking leopards and sloth bears around the villus. Lunch is taken in the park so you do not lose the middle of the day.

Overnight — Habarana

South west into the humid lowlands bordering the rainforest, about five hours. An evening walk on the forest edge.

A full day with a specialist bird guide tracking the famous mixed-species feeding flocks — the best chance on the island for endemics such as the red-faced malkoha and Sri Lanka blue magpie.

Overnight — Sinharaja

South east to the dry plains, about four hours, with an evening safari on arrival.

Overnight — Yala

Two more safaris in different zones of the park, morning and late afternoon, which are the hours the leopards move.

The coastal lagoons and salt pans, with extensive flocks of greater flamingos and migratory shorebirds. A quieter, slower day after Yala.

Questions

About this tour

A guided night trek using red-filtered torches, led by a naturalist, to look for the grey slender loris — a small, large-eyed nocturnal primate. Red light is used because it does not damage their night vision.

We cap occupancy at four to five guests per jeep so everybody has an unobstructed window for photography, rather than the six or seven some operators run.

Sightings are never guaranteed. The itinerary includes multiple safaris in high-density zones at the right times of day, which is the only honest way to improve the odds.

They are rugged 4x4s built for rough ground, so the ride is bumpy. We provide extra cushions and the driver will keep the pace slower on request.

No. Walking is prohibited in Wilpattu, Minneriya and Yala for safety. Walking is permitted in designated conservation zones such as Sinharaja, which is where the walking days are placed.

A telephoto lens, a dust cover for the body, lens cleaning kit and plenty of storage. The dry-zone parks are extremely dusty.

Yes. We work only with operators who keep to international whale-watching distances and speed limits, which sometimes means a longer approach.
