Overview
Ten days along the Ramayana trail, in sequence
To embark on the Ramayana Trail across Sri Lanka is to step directly into the pages of one of humanity’s greatest epic scriptures, transforming a standard holiday into a powerful spiritual pilgrimage. Your sacred journey begins along the northwestern coast at the ancient Munneswaram and Manavari Temples. The air here is warm, dry, and heavy with the scent of sea salt, burning camphor, and fresh marigold garlands. Standing before the sacred lingam at Manavari, the oldest temple dedicated to Lord Rama on the island, you hear the low, rhythmic chanting of the priests. The stone floors feel cool beneath your bare feet as you witness the complex rituals, connecting you deeply with the ancient events where Lord Rama sought blessings after the great battle.
The pilgrimage route climbs from the coastal plains deep into the misty, emerald hills of Nuwara Eliya, where the environment shifts to the legendary Ashok Vatika. Now home to the Seetha Amman Temple, this sacred site is situated beside a clear mountain stream where Goddess Seetha was held captive by King Ravana. The air here is sharp and cool, carrying the fresh scent of pine needles and mountain blooms. Standing by the stream, you look down in marvel at the massive rock formations that bear giant circular depressions, believed by pilgrims to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman as he leaped across the hills. The sound of the rushing water combined with the devotional singing of pilgrims creates an intense spiritual atmosphere filled with emotion.
The trail winds deeper into the mountains to the dramatic cliff faces of Ella, the location of the legendary Ravana Caves and Waterfalls. The landscape here is magnificent and rugged, characterized by sheer rock drops and dense jungle. Climbing the steep paths to the mouth of the cave, the air inside is dark and cool, carrying a powerful sense of ancient mystery. Looking out from the cave entrance across the vast valley below, you can visualize the epic scale of the ancient kingdom.
The journey concludes along the southern coast at the Rumassala hill in Galle, a spectacular coastal outcrop believed to be a dropped piece of the Himalayan Sanjeevani mountain brought by Lord Hanuman, rounding out a powerful spiritual loop across the island.

Questions
About this tour
Why does Seetha Amman Temple matter?
It stands on the site identified as Ashok Vatika, the garden where Seetha was held captive by Ravana. The stream beside it and the circular depressions in the rocks opposite, held to be Hanuman’s footprints, are central to the pilgrimage.
Are strict vegetarian meals guaranteed?
Yes. We work with specialist restaurants and hotel kitchens along the route to provide North and South Indian vegetarian meals daily. Jain requirements can also be met with notice.
Is this suitable for elderly pilgrims?
Largely yes. Most sites are accessible with short walks. The Ravana caves involve steep steps, and we arrange a ground-level alternative for anyone who would rather not climb.
What is the significance of Divurumpola?
The name means place of oath. It is revered as the site of the Agni Pariksha, Seetha’s ordeal by fire, and oaths sworn there are still treated as binding in local custom.
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Modest traditional clothing is expected — saris or salwar kameez for women, trousers or dhotis for men — with shoulders and knees covered at every site, and shoes removed at temple entrances.
Can we buy prasad and religious items?
Yes. All the major temples have stalls selling coconuts, flowers, holy ash and devotional items.
Are Hindi-speaking guides available?
Yes. We can provide Hindi-speaking national guides trained specifically in the scriptural background of the Ramayana trail. Request this at the time of booking.
