Southern Sands Voyage

Ten days down the south coast: Bentota’s golden sand, two days inside Galle Fort, blue whales off Mirissa and the reef at Hikkaduwa.

Overview

Ten days on the south coast, at the pace it deserves

The southern coast of Sri Lanka is a visual masterpiece painted in brilliant shades of turquoise, gold, and jade. As you travel down the Southern Expressway, the urban landscape of Colombo melts away, replaced by endless corridors of swaying coconut palms that bend gracefully toward the sea. Arriving in Bentota, the air feels heavy with the scent of salt water and tropical blooms. The beach here is vast and untamed, with wide stretches of golden sand meeting the rhythmic, thundering crests of the Indian Ocean. Walking along the shoreline at dusk, the sky transforms into a dramatic canvas of deep crimson and violet, reflecting perfectly on the wet sand as the tide recedes.

Further south lies the historic jewel of Galle. Entering the gates of the UNESCO World Heritage Dutch Fort feels like stepping through a portal in time. The air here is different—cooler, held within thick coral-and-granite ramparts that have withstood centuries of ocean storms and colonial wars. The scent of cinnamon, roasted coffee, and old wood drifts from converted boutique villas and chic cafés. Walking down the narrow, cobblestone alleyways, your eyes track the unique blend of European colonial architecture and tropical design, while the distant, steady crash of waves against the sea wall serves as a constant acoustic backdrop.

The journey reaches its natural peak in Mirissa, a crescent-shaped bay where the vibe is distinctly coastal and adventurous. Waking up before dawn, you board a deep-sea vessel, heading out into the dark blue depths of the continental shelf. The morning air is crisp and salt-sprayed. Suddenly, the water breaks, and a colossal blue whale breaks the surface, its massive fluke catching the early light before slipping silently back into the abyss. It is a humbling, breathtaking encounter that contrasts beautifully with the late-afternoon relaxation back on the beach, where you sit with your feet in the sand, watching stilt fishermen cast their lines against a blazing horizon.

Day by day

Itinerary

Touch down at Bandaranaike International and transfer to your Colombo hotel. An easy evening walk along Galle Face Green, where the whole city comes out at sunset to fly kites and eat isso wade.

Overnight — Colombo

South on the expressway to the golden resort belt, about ninety minutes. The rest of the day is yours on the beach.

Overnight — Bentota

A boat safari through the mangrove channels of the Madu Ganga, stopping at a cinnamon island to watch the bark being peeled. Jet-skiing or Brief Garden in the afternoon if you want them.

Overnight — Bentota

An hour down the coast to the Dutch fort. Check in inside the walls and walk the ramparts as the light goes.

Overnight — Galle

A full day in the fort: the Dutch Reformed Church, the lighthouse, the maritime museum, and the gem boutiques along Pedlar Street. The streets are flat, narrow and traffic-calmed, so it is all done on foot.

Overnight — Galle

Forty minutes east to the crescent bay. The afternoon is free, and it is worth an early night before the whale boat.

Overnight — Mirissa

Out before dawn to the edge of the continental shelf for blue whales and large pods of spinner dolphins. Back by mid-morning. The stilt fishermen work the shallows at Koggala in the late afternoon.

Overnight — Mirissa

West along the coast to the marine sanctuary. A glass-bottom boat over the reef, or snorkel it yourself — green turtles come in close to the beach here and are used to people.

Overnight — Hikkaduwa

Back up to the capital. Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square and the Dutch Hospital for shopping, then a farewell dinner.

Overnight — Colombo

Transfer to Bandaranaike International for your outbound flight.

Questions

About this tour

November to April. The sea is calm through those months and blue whales migrate close to Sri Lanka’s southern tip, which is why the itinerary is built around that window.

Yes. The Madu River boat safari and banana boat rides use mandatory life jackets and are run by certified instructors, and the river itself is sheltered.

Yes. The fort is best explored on foot — the streets are narrow, flat and traffic-calmed, which also makes it one of the more accessible sites on the island.

Safety comes first. If the port authority cancels departures for rough seas we reschedule where the itinerary allows, or substitute an inland alternative such as a cinnamon plantation visit.

Yes. Some conservation centres run managed evening visits to watch hatchlings being released into the sea. We can add one on the Bentota or Hikkaduwa legs.

Packages are booked on bed and breakfast or half board, which leaves you free to eat lunch at the beachside restaurants rather than being tied to the hotel.

Your chauffeur-guide gives you the historical context on the drive and walks with you through open sites like Galle Fort. A few specific monuments use their own licensed site guides.
