Overview
Nine days in the parks the jeeps have not found
For those who want to experience nature away from the main tourist crowds, the Wilderness Uncovered tour offers a route through the island’s most isolated and pristine conservation zones. The journey begins in the remote valleys of Gal Oya National Park, a hidden gem untouched by mass tourism. Gal Oya is famous for its massive central reservoir, the Senanayake Samudra, surrounded by dramatic rocky mountains and thick green forests. The unique highlight here is the boat safari. Gliding across the vast water at sunrise, the lake is dead calm, its surface reflecting the pink-tinged morning clouds. The air is clean and fresh. Suddenly, your guide points toward a small island, and you witness an incredible sight: an Asian elephant swimming gracefully between islands, its trunk raised like a snorkel above the water. It is a peaceful, ancient encounter that defines the spirit of this untouched park.
The wilderness journey continues south toward the remote wetlands of Kumana National Park, widely recognized as Sri Lanka’s premier bird sanctuary. Known as Yala East, Kumana features a massive 200-hectare natural mangrove swamp that serves as a critical breeding ground for water birds. Bumping along the quiet tracks in your 4×4, the environment opens up into expansive marshes filled with thousands of birds. The air is thick with the calls of elegant Painted Storks, Spoonbills, and Pelicans nesting in the mangrove trees. Watching a massive Lesser Adjutant Stork hunt in the shallows as the golden afternoon light hits the water is a visual treat for anyone who appreciates the natural world.
The final chapters of this nature expedition take you into the coastal dunes of Yala’s quiet outer zones. Here, the dry scrub forest meets the wild waves of the Indian Ocean. The landscape is a beautiful mix of rugged granite outcrops, open plains, and blue lagoons. Bumping along the sandy tracks, you watch out for the top predators, but also take time to appreciate the smaller details—a pack of golden jackals playing along the edge of a salt pan, a crested hawk-eagle scanning the ground from a high branch, or a herd of wild spotted deer resting beneath a shady tree. This tour offers a profound, deep look into the true heart of Sri Lanka’s wild spaces.

Questions
About this tour
Are swimming elephants at Gal Oya guaranteed?
No. Encounters on the lake are common in the dry season from March to September, but swimming is natural behaviour and cannot be promised. The boat safari is worth it regardless.
How is Kumana different from Yala West?
Kumana sees a small fraction of the vehicles and is focused on wetland birdlife rather than big cats. If you want quiet, it is the better park.
Who are the Vedda people we meet at Gal Oya?
The indigenous forest community of Sri Lanka. The walk is led by the local clan leader, who demonstrates traditional tracking and medicinal plant use. It is arranged with the community and led by them.
Are the Gal Oya boat safaris safe?
Yes. We use modern flat-bottomed boats with life jackets, crewed by park rangers and experienced boatmen.
Is this tour good for serious bird photographers?
Yes. It is built for it, with extended time at Kumana and Kalametiya and early starts throughout.
What is the climate like in the south eastern parks?
Hot and dry, around 32°C to 35°C in the afternoon, which is why safaris run early morning and late afternoon when the animals are active.
Can we add the standard cultural sites?
Yes. Kandy or Sigiriya can be added at the start before you head into the eastern parks, at the cost of a day or two.
