Overview
Nine days above the heat
To experience the Romantic Retreat in the Hills is to enter a world wrapped in mist, emerald-green landscapes, and the old-world charm of the Central Highlands. This itinerary is built for couples who find romance in cozy mountain chills, crackling fireplaces, and endless horizons of manicured tea estates.
Your journey climbs upward into the mountains, where the hot air of the lowlands disappears, replaced by a crisp, cold mountain air that invites you to hold each other close. Arriving in Nuwara Eliya, the landscape looks like a painting—historic colonial bungalows with manicured rose gardens stand amidst rolling hills of green tea bushes. The air carries the rich, comforting scent of burning pine logs from the fireplaces and the sweet aroma of fresh pastries.
Your stay is arranged in a beautifully restored, colonial-era luxury tea planter’s bungalow. Waking up in the morning, you step out onto a private veranda as a soft mist rolls across the valley, blanketing the tea bushes below in a white shroud. A private butler serves you fresh Ceylon tea and warm scones. The absolute quiet of the estate is broken only by the distant, soothing sound of a mountain waterfall cascading down a granite cliff face, a sanctuary of absolute privacy and peace.
The romantic journey continues down into the deep valleys of Ella, moving along scenic mountain roads that offer incredible views around every bend. You find yourselves walking hand-in-hand along the railway tracks to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, standing together as the vintage blue train moves across the stone arches far above a green valley. In the evening, you sit on the deck of your luxury resort, wrapped in a warm blanket, watching the stars come alive over the dramatic Ella Gap. The cool mountain wind blowing through the trees completes a sensory journey through the high country.

Questions
About this tour
What makes a tea bungalow different from a hotel?
They are historic planters’ houses on working estates, usually with four to six rooms, a private butler, a cook who builds the menu around you, and direct access to the tea fields. You are a house guest rather than a room number.
Is it really cold enough for warm clothes?
Yes. Nuwara Eliya drops to around 10°C at night. Sweaters, a jacket and long trousers are essential, and the bungalows light fires for a reason.
Can we have a private high tea on the lawn?
Yes. The bungalow properties specialise in it — traditional high tea served on the manicured lawn with the valley below.
How long is the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella?
About two and a half hours through the most scenic stretch of the line, crossing high bridges and passing through tunnels cut in the 1920s.
Are couples' spa treatments available?
Yes. Most premium mountain resorts have spas offering treatments using local black tea and mountain herbs.
What if it rains during the outdoor walks?
Hill country weather changes quickly. If rain closes the trekking we substitute a private tea tasting, a cooking masterclass or simply a longer afternoon by the fire.
Does this work as a babymoon?
Yes, and it is popular for exactly that. The pace is slow, the climate is cool, the driving legs are short and the emphasis is on comfort rather than activity.
